Macbeth Act I, Scene vi, Lines 47~59













Lady Macbeth: What beast was't then
                       that made you break this enterprise to me?
                       When you durst do it, then you were a man;
                       And to be more than what you were, you would
                       Be so much more the man.  Nor time, nor place,
                       Did then adhere, and you would make both:
                       They have made themselves, and as their fitness now
                       Does unmake you.  I have given suck, and know
                       How tender 'tis to love the babe  that milks me;
                       I would, while it was smiling in my face,
                       Have pluck'd my nipple from his boneless gums,
                       And dash'd the brains out, had I so sworn as you
                       Have done to this.


Macbeth is one of the darkest tragedies by Shakespeare.  The play begins with the three weird sisters conversing, while in the background, the sky is dim and storm-like.  Already, at the beginning of the play, you know that this 'foul' play is going to be an extremely sordid one.  Macbeth violated so many social rules and laws of nature, that you know the only way for this play to end is for him to die.  However, if it had not been Lady Macbeth, would Macbeth had proceeded with his plan to murder Duncan? Debatable.  It is like blaming the loss of Eden on Eve, except Adam also had the free will to choose for himself.  The parallel here, is that Macbeth did not have to listen to Lady Macbeth and be persuaded into committing a double crime: regicide, and killing of a guest. 

Lady Macbeth is an interesting character by herself.  Unlike the Gertrude [Hamlet's mother], she is decisive and ambitious.  While Gertrude is helpless even with her position as queen, Lady Macbeth proves a 'helpful assistant' to her husband.  She confronts Macbeth and challenges him into thinking that he can only be more than what he is by carrying out their 'enterprise'.  Using herself as an example, she persuades Macbeth by telling him what she is willing to do to keep her word. 

It would not be fair to describe Lady Macbeth as evil, though.  For if she is an evil character, she would have enjoyed the fruit of their crime, rather than loosing her sanity and eventually committing suicide.  I believe there is a little innocence and pure heart in her.  It was only ambition that prompt her into becoming an accomplice to her husband.

馬克白可以說是莎翁筆下最黑暗的悲劇。從一開始三巫女出現在烏雲密布的背景中就可以了解這齣戲將是非常黑暗的。馬克白不僅是殺害國王,他還是趁國王在自己家中作客時犯下這件謀殺案。由此可見,整場戲只有一個結果-馬克白必死。但若不是馬克白夫人一直說服他,他會有勇氣或是有決心要殺害國王嗎?就像亞當與夏娃的故事一樣。是該將失樂園的罪過怪到夏娃頭上嗎?可是難道亞當就沒有自我果斷的能力嗎?結論是,馬克白可以不用被他夫人說服去殺害國王的。

馬克白夫人本身就是個很有意思的角色。他不像哈母雷特的母親,整場戲裡,除了皇后,還是皇后。他的個性較為軟弱,若是失去王后這個頭銜,他就什麼也不是。相較之下,馬克白夫人是個果斷又有野心的女人。 他讓馬克白了解,一言既出、駟馬難追!既然說好要殺害國王,就不能退縮。以他自己為例,為了實踐諾言,他會不惜殺害自己哺乳中的嬰兒!這一切都是為了要讓馬克白能夠坐上國王的寶座。

若是說馬克白夫人是邪惡的,又是非常有爭議性的。若他本性真邪惡,為何到最後會喪失理智並自殺?我相信馬克白夫人還是有些天真與清白的成份在的。他所做的一切都只是為了幫助馬克白能順利當上國王。




收場白:莎老頭女角色對話快告一個段落了。接下來將會介紹一些有特色的男角色。若有時間的話,可能也會錄製一些男女角色的對話。不過我不保證一定會,因為時間必須要與我的男錄音員配合。

Epilogue: A Conversation with Shakespeare's Women is about to come to an end.  There will be a few recordings of male characters of interest, and may be some dialogues between different male and female characters if time permits.  I cannot promise anything at this point, for the available time for recording also depends on my male voice actor.
