This is probably one of Shakespeare’s darkest tragedies.

此劇可說是莎士比亞劇中最黑暗的悲劇。
 

Macbeth is a renowned Scottish warrior.  After a victorious battle, he runs into three witches on the way home, who predicts of his elevated social status.  After returning to his castle, he finds that the witches’ prophecy came true, thus conspires with his wife to murder the king who will be staying at the castle, to make the rest of the prophecy come true.  Macbeth thought about aborting the plan, but Lady Macbeth urges him to continue with the murder.

馬克白是蘇格蘭的名戰將。當他戰勝而歸時，途中遇見三位巫女。他們對馬克白預言升官最後離開前還稱他為國王。回到城堡中發現巫婆預言成真。與妻子協商，刺殺來訪的國王。原本馬克白因道德因素退縮，卻被妻子慫恿繼續進行計畫。
 

But because the witches also predicted that Banquo’s children will succeed the throne.  Macbeth is unwilling to succumb his seat, thus devises a plan to massacre Banquo’s family.  Afterwards, Lady Macbeth is unable to withstand the guilt of her conscience, commits suicide after suffering mental instability.  Although Macbeth seeks the witches’ advice once again, to secure his throne, he is still unable to escape ‘fate’.  He is killed by Macduff in the end. 

但因巫婆預言也測到好友Banquo的子孫會繼承之後的王位。馬克白不想讓出王位，因此也將Banquo一家人刺殺。最後馬克白夫人因良心作祟，導致精神狀況不穩定。最後墜樓死亡。馬克白雖然又去尋找巫婆尋求安定王位之策，卻還是無法逃過『命運』。最後還是被僥倖逃走的Macduff刺殺。
