This is the second time since I got here that the fire alarm had gone off in the halls.  This is the second time THIS WEEK that I have personally been in a 'fire drill'.  The first time it went off in the halls, I did not run out of my room.  Seeing that I just got here, and was still trying to get over my jetlag... I did not even get out of my bed because my sixth sense told me: THERE IS NO FIRE!  Fortunately, the fire engine arrived and soon left.
On Tuesday, I was suppose to meet up with my MA mates at the library after lunch.  I walked by the library and saw a big crowd gathering in front of it.  Of course, I heard the fire alarm too.  But seeing no smoke, I figured 'it was a drill'.  Although, the fire engine did arrive, it left shortly after.  I found my MA mates standing outside the building, but the people wouldn't let us back in, so we left.
This morning, UK time, of course, the fire alarm went off AGAIN!  This time, it really got on my nerves because I had just woken up, and I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE MY ROOM!  I thought to myself, (here's the advantage of having your room facing the main road) if I see the fire engine arrive, then I will rush out.  However intolerable the sound was, I remained in my room.
However, my plan was interrupted by a knock on the door from the girl next door.  Along with another girl from Vietnam, we reluctantly headed out of the building after seeing everyone gathering outside.  We were accosted by some woman on our way out.  She reprimanded us as if we were toddlers, "This is a fire alarm!  Why haven't you come out of your rooms?"  What answer did she expect?  I couldn't possibly retort and say, "Well, it's just a drill, ain't it?"  I just stared back at her, thinking you should either let us back in, or let us out.  Don't just stand there and expect an answer for your rediculous question.  After writing down our room numbers, wooo~~~ now I'm in trouble!, she finally let us disperse ourselves amongst the others.
You can't blame us, really.  This is an awful time to do this drill.  Most of us are still in bed, or had just gotten out of bed.  One Indian girl was FREEZING! because obviously, we had been requested repeatedly to 'leave the building immediately'.  Some of them didn't even lock their doors, because they had to 'leave the building immediately'.
What I would like to say, is that, I think fire drills are ridiculous.  They do this not to prepare you in case of real fire, but to frighten you.  There is no fire.  There is not going to be one.  Not while I'm here.  So stop 'drilling' and do something practical, like put up recycle bins for cans and stuff.  You do this often enough, people are not going to 'leave the building immediately' when they hear the alarm next time!

*The following article is a recount of the second part of our trip to Wu-lai.
Before making our way to the waterfall, we had already checked around to see if any of the hot spring hotels had sauna rooms.  It turned out that none of them had saunas.  Eventually, we decided to throw our money to the one that was most pleasant while introducing their facilities.
The view was not perfect, but for the price, it was reasonable enough.
We had two hours, but since it was not yet high season, I think they wouldn't kick us out even if we went over time.
What a way to end our day!
We made good use of the bed, too. [for sleeping... what are you thinking???]
It's got a TV, too!
I recommend this place because it's walkable.  After a rewarding hot spring bath, they even offer free drinks.  In addition to that, I even got a NT$100 voucher.  Of course, since I was leaving, I gave it to my dearly beloved sister.  She better make good use of it!

The weather was great this day.  My friend, Sam and I decided to take a walk around the city on foot.  At the end of the day, I realized that the tour guide was right, when she told us that you can get around this city on foot.  I would have never imagined that Albert Dock was a walkable distance to where I live, but it turned out that it is, indeed, walkable.
Sam is a big-time Beatles fan.  He went in and got some souveniors for his family and friends, and I got myself a little gift as well.
We plan to come back to this together some other day.  Maybe next week, if the weather is nice.
The lil souvenior I got myself.
Albert Dock on a sunny day.
Apparently, that massive boat is docking for a few days to drop people off, and waiting for people to get on board.  Then, it's on its way to Dubai, and it's going to stay there, permanently.  I think they're going to build the ship into a hotel or something.  This could very well be its last trip.  Oh, and this , by the way, the famous and infamous TITANIC had many close links to this port!
The hotel next to the sea.
I've told you about the wind energy generators, but now I'm going to tell you that this is where they're going to hold the next MTV music awards.
It was a nice walk, actually.  And I think I did a pretty good job.  No panting, and didn't feel tired at all.  I would like to mention the fact that even though it was sunny, the wind was extremely chilly.  Good thing we had been walking all this time, or else, I couldn't have survived!
So after Albert Dock, we went back to City Center and found the cinema.  I think it's great!  Because now I'll have a place to go once the new 007 is out!
Aw~ isn't that cute?  One side for Angelino, and the other for 小虎。[I did NOT buy it...]
The superstore is absolutely unavoidable when you make it down to the city center!  I actually came prepared this time, but Sam said his membership card will arrive any day, and suggested that I wait for it because of the discount.
If you don't like the Beatles, you're going to grow to love them.  If you hate them, then you're in the wrong city, because they are everywhere.  And the locals, STILL adore them like mad!
I didn't get the jersey, but I didn't walk out the store empty-handed, either.  There is a reason why I wanted to get this today.  It's the theme that goes hand-in-hand with the other little token I got earlier.
One that says Liverpool, and one that says the Beatles.  One is in red[LFC], the other in blue[Everton].  Like the title of this article: it doesn't get more 'Liverpool' than this!
Thank you for reading.  Until next time!

At the entrance of Sydney Jones Library 入口
One of the things I've learned to enjoy most is the access to the library.  Actually, I could've gone in last week, but since something went wrong with the administration, and many of us did not receive our student cards, I had to wait the following week to explore my new paradise.
From what I've heard from my MA mates, who did their BA's elsewhere in the UK, this library is equally astoundiing to them as it is to me.  Through all the horrible experience I've had with libraries back in Taiwan, I'm going to have to say this again, and again: I love Sydney Jones!
There are actually two libraries on campus, and this one contains all the arts and humanity collections.  The sciences and engineering library is elsewhere.  SJL is extremely close to where I live, and the atmosphere of the library is absolutely fantastic!
There are two wings to this library, one wing, which is called the Grove Wing, is where all the literary collections are.  Needless to day, that is where you'll be able to find me while I'm there.  There are sofas in the Link area for reading, and there are also different study areas designated for different purposes.  I have to say now, that I greatly appreciate this.  Because NO ONE sleeps in the study areas.  NO ONE leaves their crap on the tables to needlessly occupy the tables while they leave for washrooms or even lunch.  You will ALWAYS be able to find a table to study at.
Upon my first exploration, I was completely dumbfounded by the fact that almost all of these books are way older than I am.  The following are two of the books that instantly caught my attention:
This version of Morte Arthure was published in 1865 from the fifteenth century Robert Thornton's MS .  Impressive isn't it.  I think I almost had a heart attack holding the book in my hand, then later when I found out that I could actually 'check the book out'!!
The binding remains well intact.
The intro and first few lines of Morte Arthure.
This is all in old English, so please don't feel bad about your ability if you can't understand that.  I can hardly understand it myself.  I overestimated myself when I checked out this book.  I returned it the next day, but only because I knew I had to reserve my borrowing quota for academic reading.
Volume 10 of Complete Shakespeare's First Folio!
These were reprinted from the acutal First Folio!  It is extremely interesting to compare how the language has evovled, and not to mention the fact that this is THE Shakespeare all Willy-doting nerds have to take a look at.  This is incomparible to any of the modern editions of his works. Yes, even Oxford and RSC cannot compete with this.
Please notice the difference in spelling from the modern editions.
We, meaning students in taught MA programs, are allowed to check out 15 items, with the addition of 2 more on short loan.  The best news of all is that this library is open 24 hours from Monday to Friday, and it is also open on the weekend as well!

It's an interesting experience to witness the change of season through the changing color of leaves.
I've waited to write my first journal after my first tutorial, as they call it here, because I knew that I would certainly have something to say after it.  It's been wonderful to finally be around people who actually like Shakespeare, instead of those who are either intimidated by his works or pretending to like him just to look and sound smart.  These people have a genuine passion for Shakespeare, poetry, and literature in general.  I'm ashamed to say that I'm actually the least passionate among them when it comes to Shakespeare.
We're doing four modules this semester, two of which run two hours fornightly and the other two are weekly one-hour sesisons.  There is one other international student doing the same MA, from Saudi Arabia.  Apparently, she's having a real difficult time adjusting to the culture here.  She is, afterall, Muslim, and all the diverse culture that England has to offer could be extremely intimidating.  Other than her, I'm the only person from Taiwan out of the nine of us.  Two of my mates are part-time, and they will only attend two modules with us.
My MA mates are extremly nice and friendly.  They have been very thoughtful and considerate to both me and the other girl.  It may be too early to say, but I like to keeps my hopes up and believe that my time here is going to be well-spent and extremely rewarding.
I have heard of all the terrible things that could happen in university accommodations, but fortunately, I have yet to experience any of those.  The girl who lives next to me is from China, but she seems to be sensible and responsible.  Most of the people that live on the same floor are girls, with the exception of one boy who is here with either his wife or girlfriend (I do not know because they live in a self-contained flat, and thus they are not sharing the kitchen nor the toilet/bathroom with the rest of us).

This article is in Chinese, about the two items I bought at the LFC club store.  I have not forgotten about the jersey.  It's just that, it's so bloody expensive, I have to be in the mood for it.  Perhaps once Christmas comes 'round...

This is an article that helps Chinese readers open a student bank account in the UK.
Loyld TSB

I noticed the sign upon my first roaming about city center.  Though, I kept telling myself that I would not touch Chinese food unless I absolutely have to.  Yet, on this day, I saw two Chinese people walking out of it, and so I was tempted into taking a look at their menu.  They have a lot of vegetarian dishes.   Then I saw 'Egg Fried Rice' for only £1.80.  I decided that if the dish was good, then not only could I recommend this place to my friends, but also come and get a taste of home once in a while.
So, after I went down to Tesco Metro and got my groceries for the next couple of days, I went back to it and ordered myself a serving of 'egg fried rice'.  The restaurant definitely had a very 'Chinese' atmosphere to it.  As I wasn't sure if they spoke Mandarin, I ordered the dish in English.  I heard the chef shout out in Mandarin: 炒飯!, but still feeling a bit awkward, I thanked the waitress in English when she gave me my fried rice.
I got to the dorm, and couldn't wait to open the box.  I took a mouthful and decided instantly, that I would become a frequent patron of the restaurant.  Yeap.  It was that good.
I will definitely recommend the place to my friends who would like a taste of authentic Chinese food!

This mailbox is just around the corner to where I live.  I will be sending all my postcards through this.
Very 'Harry Potter' telephone booth.  But since it's quite easy to obtain a SIM card here, I don't suppose I will be needing these booths.
Apparently, it would be cheaper to share a taxi fare than to get on a bus with a group of five.  Hopefully, I will be able to enjoy a few taxi rides here.  Should be interesting.
Who was it? that told me the traffic lights in Taiwan are for decoration?  The lights HERE are definitely for decoration!  You have to push that button and WAIT.  Most people here just look both ways and run across the street before even touching that button.  The good thing is, the cars actually STOP whenever they see someone crossing, even if it's their green light.
I have no problem adjusting to the way the cars drive here.  Thankfully I have lived in a country where they drive on the left.
What is that doing there?  Got no idea.  The department store is so different from ones back home.  So old.  The prices, though, are just as expensive.  Won't be doing any of my shoppings there!
City Center
The good-o-Mac.  Won't even bother stepping into it.
Superlambanana
This funny looking creature is called 'Superlambanana'.  Apparently, it was designed as a token of celebration of Liverpool being the European Capital of Culture 2008.  There is a larger one on the other side of town, but we'll save that for another day when I have finally figured out how the bus works.

I almost eneded up going to this 'match' alone.  I wouldn't even try to get my new friends doing Football Management to go, 'cuz they would be seeing the match at the stadium!  My other new friends were either away, or not really interested in football.  Fortunately, my new fellow classmate was free, and joined me.
This pub is extremely close to where I live.  Even at night, it would be a convenient venue to meet friends.
When we arrived, the place was still quite empty.  But the crowd gradually gathered up as the time got closer to kickoff.  Most of the people I've recently met have been fans of the club way before they came here to Liverpool.  I wonder if that affected their decision on where they were going for their MA's...
