01.jpgThis is the campus on which I spent a year loving, and will spend the rest of my life reminiscing.
School of English - Cypress Building
This is our building. Just a simple cement building, no frills. People often get really disappointed when they see that they had come thousands of miles across oceans, just to study in an old building like this. Do you think we get jealous of the fancy architecture and design of other buildings like the Business School? I can't speak for all, but I don't. Like they say, people who study words, don't need any fancy facilities for satisfaction. Just put us in a room, any room, with books, tables, and chairs, and the rest will deliver itself.
Stair case
Corridor 走廊
Staff
Seminar room, full of memories.
Another room loaded with memories.
Pigeon holes
Our very own pigeon hole.
I hope people don't assume that I know 'everything'. There's a story to this pigeon hole. On one of our assignment handouts, the instructions said: your essays must be in the pigeon hole by XX/XX... I pointed to the words 'pigeon hole' and chuckled to my mate. She realised afterwards that I had not known what it was. I thought it was British slang, like a cute way of calling these things. Turned out, there are actually new things I can learn.
Sydney Jones Library - home to all books on humanities.
Sydney Jones
The library is open for 24 hours for the majority of the year. This was paradise for me. Twenty-five books for check out. Thousands of books I wanted to read, but so little time. I had to choose wisely. Yet, I still didn't get to read half of the books I had been interested in.
Computer area
This was where some of the work got done. Of course, this was also the place where I get myself distracted by going on Facebook and chatting with friends back home. They had so much patience with me, as these computers did not have Chinese characters input software.
Service desks.
That, by the way, is where I got my dissertation bounded.
Link to Grove Wing - now we go to where it really matters to me.
The literature section.
Oh, how I miss walking down the aisle of books, knowing that I could pick up any random book and find something interesting in it. When will I ever get this feeling again?
Silent study area, but usually it's not that silent...
Group study rooms.
Check-out machine.
Looking out from the library window.

Abercromby Square. Abercromby 花園。
John at the No. 5 Cafe.
The corner where I'd used to sit.
Bistro above the cafe.
Water, sauces - self service.
Simple, but delicious.
Guild of Students.
Courtyard Cafe.
Foundation Building.
This is an important building, because this was where I'd used to do my work as a student ambassador. But more importantly, there's Costa, Greggs, Subway, and further down, the evil Tesco.

Foundation building, sitting right next to our landmark building - the Victoria Building.

This is not London.  There is no 9 3/4 platform, and there are no trains that will take you to Hogwarts.  After having been here for a while already, I have to admit that I had only first set foot inside this station recently.  My previous train rides all departed from a smaller station - Liverpool Central.  It was not until I had to pick up a friend here, that I first saw how impressive this station really is.
Because it was my first experience, I noticed for the first time how many varieties of trains there were.  I've frequently heard about delays and cancellations, but I had not encountered those during my few travels so far.  Everything ran very smoothly when I went to Stratford with my friend, and also when I was on my own to Cardiff.  Transferring, departure times, and arrival times were all well in control.  I intentionally arranged for the trip to Stratford to be before my trip to Cardiff because I wanted someone to take me through the process before I do it on my own.  I used to moan at Jason for not taking advantage of the public transport systems in Taiwan, but it was only until I arrived here, did I realise that it can be a very big deal for an expat, even if you have no language barrier!
Unlike the service provided by Merseyrail, these trains were clean and comfy.  Of course, they weren't as good as our own Tze-Chiang Express, but why?  Because you can't adjust the backs of the seats!  You have to keep your back straight the whole way through!
There is something that I prefer about the trains here, and that is the tables in some of the cars.  If you have a long journey ahead, it would make life much easier if you had a table where you could eat, write, read, play games, and/or use your computer on.  The toilets are also much cleaner and sanitary.  However, this also depends on the service provider.  Some trains are not as new as others.
Crewe to Cardiff, Arriva
Cardiff to Chester, Arriva
Other than the differences in the cars, there is also the scenery out your window.  The country scenery here is dramatically different from both lines of rail tracks in Taiwan.  That is why I bearly slept on my journey.  If I missed the scenery this time, when will it be that I see this next?  Other than the green interminable grassfields, there are also sheep and cattle happily devouring grass on them.  The little country houses along the way are also very picturesque.

What happens when a group of enthusiastic, passionate, and outgoing ambassadors get together?  Ever since our training session in February, we had not had another chance to meet and get to know each other better.  Because we work at different hours, according to our respective schedules, and our work load also differs depending on the area of which we are in charge.  That is why I never hesitate to agree to join any gatherings with the ambassadors.  Unfortunately I had already missed one outing opportunity.  Although I was fortunate enough to join the gathering this time, it was only after a tremendous amount of effort, that we were finally able to arrange this gathering.
A couple of weeks ago, we all received an email asking us all to go out for a barbeque.  Then, we got another email saying that the weather didn't look too good, so arrangements might be made so that we would dine at a restaurant.  I didn't mind, really, where we went or what we did, as long as we got a chance to sit down and socialise.  Others didn't seem to be on the same line of thought.  Forty-eight hours before our scheduled gathering time, people were still trying to figure out what restaurant to go to.  Then, someone offered a venue at their church to carry out our usual barbeque plan.
The venue was quite a distance from campus.  I sent off an email the night before, asking where and when to meet if we needed a lift.  I waited till 12pm the next day, two hours prior to the set time of our meeting time, still no answer.  Finally, I decided to call someone and find out.  When I got to the halls of the other ambassadors, I realised that they had prepared some of their home cuisines to bring!
I didn't know how to react at first.  If they had mentioned earlier, all of us could have helped prepare a little of our own cuisines and make a little contribution.  But then I was so excited by the sight and the smell of their food that I didn't make any comments.  When we finally arrived, another ambassador finally expressed what I also had in mind.
We were fortunate to have shelter in the dining area behind the church, but what do we do about the barbeque?  The boys found a place behind the church to set up the barbeque, and finally, everything began to run smoothly.
All these people gathering around to light four barbeque sets...
None of these are for me...
Although it was originally planned as 'barbeque' for us ambassadors, somehow a whole lot of other people we had never even seen turned up.  Most of them are family and friends of the staff, who are in a way, our employers.  Only about ten of us were actually ambassadors.  So, in the end, we were actually catering for this group of people, instead of merely filling our own tummies.  This has to do with the general characteristic of 'ambassadors'.  We don't worry about being hungry.  We don't get upset about being given too much work.  We worry about these people NOT having enough food.  And our happiness is the result of satisfying other people.
Enough of that.  Let's come and see some of the food that we prepared for the day:
A table full of delicous food.
[IRRT代表 International Recruitment and Relations Team]
Nigerian cuisine - jallof rice. IRRT stands for International Recruitment and Relations Team.
Simply carrots and cabbage, but tastes great with a bit of mayo.
Barbeque chicken, amongst others...
Gambian cuisine.
Another Gamgian cuisine.
Indian cuisine.
Drinks to go with the food.
Delicious food, and a group of people we don't really know. Ha!
Although we didn't know half the people that showed up, it was a lot of fun.  A lot of times I forget that there are also undergrads amongst us.  Some of them are already preparing to head home.  What a pity.  I've only gotten to know you.  However, the experience from being a student ambassador up to now, offers some of the most unique and unforgettable memories of my life here in the UK.

Ever since our last tutorial, I rarely get an opportunity to hang out with my coursemates.  Therefore, when I heard about this picnic, I agreed to join them straight away.  Although there were only three of us in the end, and one of them is actually doing an MA in Contemporary Literature, this picnic experience had been extremely interesting.  Other than the food and the booze, it was also the little incidents that happened before and after the picnic that made it extra memorable!

When I heard that the picnic was going to be at Sefton Park, I was really excited because I knew where it was.  I had been there with other friends for the African Music Festival.  The other two girls met elsewhere, and would come to the park together after getting their drinks.  I admit having overestimated myself.  It had already taken me more than half an hour's walk to get to the park!  I wasn't sure how much further I had to go on to walk to the place they were meeting, so I decided to wait for them in the park.  This was also the result of being too confident in myself to bring a map.  Well, I told them what was around me, so they could hopefully find me, but it turned out that the fountain, the stream, and the grotto, were all ubiquitous in various parts of the park.  After a whole hour of trying to figure out where we were, we finally managed to find each other! The problem was obviously in my overestimation of my navigation skills, and my underestimation of the size of the park!
Once we had met, we found a suitable spot and dug into our food!
There was pasta, crisps, tuna sandwiches, chocolate cake, gouda cheese, biscuits, and grapes.  Obviously I was not interested in the pasta and tuna sandwich, as they were not vegetarian, but I enjoyed my cheese and grapes.  And certainly enjoyed the chocolate cake baked by my mate.
It was six o'clock when we originally planned to meet.  When we finally found each other and started the picnic, it was already seven.  However, it was still light out.  As time flew by, and we realised that it was almost ten, we decided to call it a night and pack up then head home.  The other two girls went off another direction, and I was on my own.  I told them confidently, once again, that I knew the way home.  What I did not realise, was the fact that the streets looked significantly different than they did during the day!  Plus, the last time I walked home from the park, I was with others.  So it had been alright to cut through little alleys and stuff.  Since I was on my own, I insisted walking on the main road, where I can see cars, and cars can see me, in case anything should happen.  But because of this, there were several times when I thought that I had definitely lost my way!  After about half an hour, I finally caught sight of the big cathedral by my residence, let out a big sigh of relief, and hurried home.
Google Maps will show you how massive this park is:
Last, but certainly not least, is this picture of my beautiful mate, which she had so kindly approved for me to include in this blog entry.
