'Now in its 17th year, the Mathew Street Music Festival is a great symbol of what music in all its forms means to this city and how we enjoy celebrating it.  As you'll discover this weekend, there's plenty of reasons why we're the World Capital of pop music.'
- Warren Bradley
Leader of City Council and Directors of Liverpool's Mathew Street Festival Ltd.
I wouldn't have known about Mathew Street Festival if it hadn't been my classmate from college who specifically asked if she could come on this day to take part in it.  Although my classmate and her friends did not stay long enough to see the real essence of Liverpool, but having been a part of this major musical event, must have been more than enough to last them a while.  It was certainly more than satisfying for me, as I felt an urge to publish this article as soon as I got home.
It's all about the Beatles.  But that's not all it's about.

The Cavern Club
Street performers doing their gig right outside the Cavern Club.
People mountain, people sea...
The Beatles Stage.
Appearance is not the point.  Creating the atmosphere is more important.
This band from Agentina certainly knew how.
Queen Victoria
There are crowds in all directions.
Once more, we return to the Beatles Stage.  This time, we hear a band from Sweden play.

Rain started to fall.  But the passion towards music cannot easily be extinguished.
From August 30 to 31 [Bank Holiday], there are two full days of live music performances.  Each day, there are six outdoor stages located in different areas.  But the stage in Derby Square is the only one that holds Beatles performances of bands from all over the world.
If you happen to be in town during this massive event, you do not want to miss out on our annual Mathew Street Festival'!

Live @ the Cavern Club

01.jpg

Brian
The Cavern
Tommy
The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, 和Elton
John。 The Cavern
The Cavern Club opened in 1957.  It is most famous for being the place where the Beatles manager, Brian Epstein first heard their performance in 1961.  Since the Beatles, The Cavern Club became a popular place for live music performances.  In 1973, however, the place closed down due to construction of the Merseyrail.  Tommy Smith, a Liverpool Football Club player took over the club in 1984 and reconstruction of the Club commenced.  Finally, the New Cavern Club was reopened to the public in 1991.
Other famous singers and bands that used to perform at the club included: The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, and Elton John.  Today, the Cavern Club continues to offer a variety of music performances.  Our purpose of the night, was none other than to relive the Beatles legend.
We arrived after half ten.  The show had already begun, and the atmosphere was already livened up by the band and the audience.  The stage is located two floors below ground surface.  Ventilation is not ideal, but I think everyone was willing to tolerate for the sake of the Beatles performance.  The fee for tonight's show was a mere £2.  Well worth it to experience what it would have been like back in the days.
That night, we saw a lot of grandpas and grannies dancing along with the younger generation.  Whilst dancing to the rhythm, people still remember to take shots of the performaners on the stage.  This is the kind of performance that attracts tourists from all over the world to come to the club tonight, of all nights.  After the performance, everyone left with satisfaction from the £2 entrance they had paid to get in.  It was more than well worth it.
The following video is a clip of the performance that night.  It was difficult to decide which song to make a video clip of, but when they started singing 'Let it Be', I decided it would be the perfect song to share, knowing that Beatles fan, or not, more people are likely to have heard this than any others.  Right after this song, they performed 'Hey Jude', which basically brought the night's performance to its climax.  However, I was so absorbed into the atmosphere, that I had forgotten to make another video clip.  I hope you'll all enjoy the following clip.  I've also included the original version sung by the Beatles for your viewing.
'Let it Be' performed at the Cavern Club, Liverpool, UK.

  • [Film] Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Source/來源:Google Images
[Spoiler Warning: This article contains plot/ending. Reader discretion highly recommended.]
The world works in mysterious ways.  If you still believe in coincidences, I hate to break it to you, but there are no such thing.  Everything is related to everything else.  For instance, why does the Harry Potter series end up in 7 books?  Well, according to numerology, 7 'is the most mysterious and uncanny of the numbers and one of the most important in magic.'1 There is no better number to complete the series with, other than this number.  Harry Potter is our main magus figure.  He is what would be called a 'white magician', as opposed to Voldemort and the deatheaters being the 'black magicians'.  J.K. Rowling sketches a perfect antithesis of the two sides of the art by creating a child, protected by love and steeped with innocence and goodness, against a non-living evil magician desparately attempting to return to the world and gain total control.
Magician figures are replete throughout the history of English literature.  From Merlin in Arthurian legends, all the way to Prospero in Shakespeare's 'The Tempest', John Faustus in Marlowe's 'Doctor Faustus', and even Gandalf and Saruman in J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings'.  Since the middle ages, we have been fascinated by the mystical world of magic.  It has provided an excellent way of creating theatrical spetacles because the wonders of this occult art is beyond the understanding of the average human being.
Historical magicians such as Henry Cornelius Agrippa, Pico della Mirandola, Giordano Bruno, Simon Magus, and John Dee, have all contributed a tremendous amount of knowldge in this realm.  Probably most familiar to the average audience and reader, would be John Dee, the philosopher, astrologer, and magician, but also a chief consultant of Queen Elizabeth I.  He was considered a crucial figure during her reign, but when James I succeeded the throne, he was deemed as a heretic.  Interestingly, Jacobean theatre created a fair share of plays concerning magicians.  In today's fiction and theatrical world, it maintains to be the perfect means through which the writer conveys certain ideas in the disguise of fantasy and science fiction.  This disguise is, unfortunately dimissed by the majority as insignificant and time wasting.  However, by using a plot that seems impossible, the authors' intended ideas are paradoxically enlarged tenfold.
The battle between good and evil is ultimately the problem that many stories set out to portray.  In the case of Harry Potter, we have a young and inexperienced magician fighting against an evil whose power far exceeds his own.  The audience is drawn into the plot line because Harry Potter is our typical everyman figure.  He starts out as a powerless, innocent young person, who gains more experience as the plot progresses.  The storyline of the series also develops along with its protagonist.  As the boy gets older and more mature, the plot becomes darker and the antagonist becomes even more powerful, and more difficult to diminish.
Harry Potter's white magic is justified by his cause.  He intends to rid evil and restore order to the wizardry world, but also the muggle world.  On the contrary, Voldemort's magic is sinister, and considered black magic, because we now see that since he became aware of his power as Tom Riddler, he is unable to control it.  The key word here is 'control'.  Magic is powerful.  A powerful magician learns to control his powers.  Voldemort is quite the contrary.  His power far exceeds his ability to constrain it, therefore he is consumed by his own powers.
The magician plays a significant role in literature and the stage, and in this case films as well.  Symbolically, the magician's role is 'a man whose horizon were both limitless and limited, a self-contained paradox'.  2Harry Potter's power may become dangerous to others if he does not learn to control it.  Hogwarts provides a means through which all those with these innate magical powers can learn to control them.  Of course, there are also those who are born wizards and witches who have no innate talent but have entered Hogwarts to obtain knowledge in the occult art simply because they are expected to be the same as their parents.  This provides a perfect backdrop which magnifies the powers of both Harry Potter and Voldemort.
All battles against evil contain certain sacrifice of innocent figures.  In the Goblet of Fire, Cedric was the sacrifice.  This pure and innocent character who has absolutely no ill intention is killed in order to enrage our protagonist's desire to restore order to the world.  In the Order of the Phoenix, Sirius Black was the sacrifice to futher intensify that feeling.  The ultimate sacrifice, however, is the death of Dumbledore.  These three figures will not die for no reason.  Although Harry is deemed to be the one to restore order, he will be accompanied by two others who will undoubtedly serve as crucial figures in the ultimate fight against evil.
One may wonder how I could be so sure that the good will win the final battle, since I have never read any of the books.  I would like to end this article by providing an answer to this.  As mentioned earlier, the series is written in 7 books, with 3 main protagonists.  In numerology, both 3 and 7 are powerful numbers.3  The number 7 'holds the key to the underlying rhythms of life'4while the number 3 'stands for everything that is best, most perfect and most holy' 5in the Christian belief. The number 3 is also the number of completeness, thus as there is no such thing as coincidences, I do believe that the good will, as of always, prevail over the evil.

Sunday afternoon, I received a call from a friend, saying that there is this African Music Festival being held at Sefton Park.  He asked me if I would be interested.  I thought to myself, I really had no good reason to refuse.  Why not?  Half an hour later, a group of five people gathered in front of our hall, bought some booze at a nearby offy, and headed down to Sefton Park in a cab.  It was a walkable distance, but we were all pretty lazy, and seeing the weather wasn't very predictable, getting a cab was probably the best option there was to get there.
When we arrived, we found a large crowd there.  There were things to play with, things to see, things to eat, and of course, most importantly, music to listen to.  Although I have yet to set foot in Africa, it was a great opportunity to absorb a bit of their culture.  Plus, I've got my friends, and booze.  How else could you spend a happy Sunday evening?

Ribs and rice.
The first thing that three of my friends did when we arrived was food hunting.  I only got a chance to take a picture of the ribs meal.  After that, we found a place on the grass, sat down, drank our booze and those who got food, ate their food.  Of course, there was a lot of enjoyable African music.  People around us were dancing cheerfully.  I suspect that because we had just arrived, and had not consumed enough alcohol, none of us were really interested in dancing, despite the tempting rhythm.
It rained for a bit, but we had umbrellas and a waterproof coat, so none of us risked getting soaking wet.  When the rain stopped, my other friend and I got hungry, so we left our place and went for a second round of food hunting.  Before that, however, we went to the loo.  You might be wondering why I must mention this minute detail.  It is worth mentioning, because as we got out of it one by one, each one of us made a comment on how surprisingly clean we thought the toilets were.  What was even more shocking, was the fact that they had provided 'hand wash' in each toilet!  How thoughtful!

A Christmas Carol

St. George's Hall
St. George's
Carolers
Great Hall
Yes!It's all FREE!

Phililp Pullman!!

Philip Pullman - In Conversation
Tolkien的『魔戒』[Lord of the Rings]卻是感到非常不以為意。
[The Northern Lights]

The Elementary Particles of Narrative
Philip
His Dark
Paradise
Paradise
Lost。
Philip
Richard
Father

Pub Quiz at the Cambridge

Okay...
I don't know why I waited until now to write this entry, but somehow the timing works out perfectly.  The Cambridge is one of the pubs on campus.  This is the place where students socialise with a glass of wine or a pint of beer.  There is no loud music.  There are no noisy telly programs to distract you from socialising with your friends.  However, this quiet pub transforms itself every Sunday night because of PUB QUIZ.
The usual pub quiz goes this way: you're asked a number of questions, and whichever team has the most correct answers wins.  The winner wins some little prize.  However, pub quiz at the Cambridge is a little different.  It combines bingo and pub quiz.  Therefore, you don't exactly need to be a genius to ace this thing.  It takes a bit of luck as well.  Write down the answers in the bubbles, and when you have a line, take the sheet up to them to be corrected.  If your answers on that line are all correct, then you win!
There are four rounds.  By the end of the second round, there will be free chips for everyone.  After the chips comes bingo!  The bingo here is a little different as well.  On a 3x10 grid, there are random numbers in random cells.  In the first round, basically you have to cross out numbers in a row.  Then after that, you cross out all the numbers on the sheet.
I BINGOED ON MY FIRST PUB QUIZ NIGHT!!!

So, as I was saying, the timing just couldn't be better.
After a few weeks of defeat, we finally came around.  Our group was too big this week, and had to be severed into two.   Our other team consisted of only local Brits, while our team consisted of two Americans, two Canadians, a Taiwanese [moi, of course], and only one local Brit.  We were a smart team, but I honestly didn't think we were going to win, because only a local would know the answer to some of these questions.  We have only one on our team!  Well, the first round came and went.  Then, all of a sudden, we won the second round!
Pub quiz is a great way to socialise with the locals.  Other than my MA mates, I don't think I would have gotten to know any other locals if it hadn't been for pub quiz.  When I first asked my flatmate if I could bring my friends to pub quiz, I was asked if they were smart.  Haha... You know, you do need to have a little well-rounded knowledge to participate.  They do take pub quiz quite seriously too.  If you are unable to make any contribution, you might not be welcomed...
So, we have made this into a habit now.  Every Sunday night is pub quiz night.  That is why I study hard all day on Saturday and Sunday until around early evening.  Because every Sunday at 20:30, I'm either still in my room studying, or, at the Cambridge for pub quiz!
