My first Easter in the UK was void of Easter eggs and Easter bunnies.  Initially, I had no plans.  I thought I would sit in and do some course work.  My friend, however, told me that he planned to go to church.  I thought to myself, if he didn't mind my tagging along, this would be a great opportunity to observe a Christian ritual.  I think I made the right choice.  If I had come during Christmas, it would've been nice, except less interactive.  The Eucharist was a much more interactive service to observe.

After participating in the holy communion, which is basically what Eucharist means, we went for a Sunday roast.  This meal had been promised to me by this friend since my birthday!  We had both been so busy that it just hasn't happened yet.  Since we went to church together, and we must eat anyway, the Sunday roast idea was accepted at once.

I remember on my first day in Liverpool, when the tour bus drove around this corner, I told myself: I'd come and eat here some day!  Basically, it was only because the tour guide said the food was good, and that the men's toilet was worth a visit!  Well, it took me six months to get here, but hey, I'm here.  So let's take a look at what the food is like.

A Sunday roast consists of roasted meat, roasted potatoes, vegetables with gravy.  Since England is ever-so vegetarian friendly, of course a vegetarian roast would almost always be available.  In the picture above, you can also catch a glimpse of the beef roast my friend ordered.  The tradition of the Sunday roast is believed to have come from the fact that the meat can be left in the oven to cook at home while the family goes to church.  Once they get home, the meal would be ready.

I took the opportunity to ask my friend a few concerns I had about the differences between the Easter traditions in the U.S. and here in the U.K.  Apparently, his family does pretty much the same thing we did today: go to church, then eat a big meal.  The rest of the day is apparently not particularly special.  He did also mention that the Eucharist was much more formalised here.  However, we did keep in mind that we did go to the largest cathedral in town.

To sum up my Easter Sunday, I'd like to say that it couldn't have happened any other way.  I thought the service was fascinating.  I enjoyed my vegetarian nut roast.  The weather was absolutely beautiful, and I actually started working on my essay.  With that said, here's a picture of the vegetaian nut roast by itself.  Enjoy!
