大家都知道英國大文豪莎士比亞。即使你對英國文化不了解，從來沒讀過英國的文學，或甚至連英文都不是你的好朋友，你都一定有聽過莎士比亞。但是如果沒有接觸過英國文學，甚至連念英美文學長大的人都比較少接觸到莎士比亞同時期的競爭對手 - Christopher Marlowe。其實他是寫"Doctor Faustus"「浮士德」的作者。而且要不是年紀輕輕在酒吧遇害，很多學者認為他未來的發展應該是可以比莎士比亞還要優秀的。因此也有很多傳說產生。許多文學作品也繞著這個傳說，編寫出他為什麼會遇害。電影「莎翁情史」裡有一個片段就是莎士比亞與Marlowe在酒吧遇到，Marlowe還指點了莎士比亞，給他一點寫作的方向。其實他的故事挺有趣的，作品也跟莎士比亞是不相上下的。有興趣者可以去Wiki一下，或甚至找一下浮士德的中譯本（注意，不是歌德的版本喔！歌德寫的是小說，Marlowe寫的是劇本）來讀看看。
Everyone knows Shakespeare. Even if you are unfamiliar with English culture, or have never approached English literature, even those who have not yet befriended the English language, would surely have heard of Shakespeare at some point. However, if you have not had contact with English literature, well, even those who are native English speakers, only get to know Marlowe on rare occassions. Christopher Marlowe is the playwright who wrote 'Doctor Faustus', not to be confused with Goethe's 'Faustus'. Scholars believe that if he had not been murdered at an early age, he had the potential to become even more than what Shakespeare had become. Because of this, many myths and legends were born. Writings of fiction and nonfiction surrounds the plot of why he had been murdered, and who the plotters were. In the film 'Shakespeare in Love', there is also a scene where the lost Shakespeare found Marlowe at a pub, and Marlowe gave him a few pointers as to how to go about with his next play. His story is intriguing, and his works are not incomparable to Shakespeare's. I recommend those who are interested to at least Wiki him, or even find a modern edition of 'Doctor Faustus' to read. 
坎特伯里其實就是Marlowe的出生地。也因為如此，坎特伯里建造的這座戲劇院，也命名為Marlowe Theatre. 當我2009年論文剛交出去，還在英國遊蕩時，這個戲劇院還在趕工中。當我2010去的時候，他當然也還沒建好。不過輪廓都已經出來了！
Canterbury is the birthplace of Marlowe. And because of this, they named their theatre after the playwright. After handing in my dissertation in September, 2009, I went on a tour for two weeks. Back then, the theatre was still under construction. When I came back here in 2010, of course, it was not finished, yet. However, you could already see the bone structure of the building. 
除了戲劇院本身，整個小鎮裡還有許多其他的小地方隱藏著Marlowe密碼，等著你去發掘。
Other than the theatre itself, the place is filled with little places that contain 'Marlowe' codes, waiting to be uncovered by you!

雖然沒能親眼看到劇場完工，但是我友人在遷離坎特伯里前，寄了幾張完工後的照片給我。為了跟大家分享，也徵求他的同意，放上這裡與大家分享。天仙希望有一天能夠進去Marlowe Theatre，看一場Marlowe創作的劇作～
Even though it's quite a pity not to be able to see the finished theatre with my own eyes, my friend in Canterbury had kindly sent me some photos of the completed theatre. And in order to share this with more people, I've asked her permission to use some of them here on my blog. I hope one day, I get to visit Marlowe Theatre, and see a Marlowe play!

逛一整天也逛累了。腿痠肚子當然也就趁機抗議。怎麼辦呢？我一直不太懂為什麼大家老是說英國的食物難吃的要死。我超愛的耶！是我的問題嗎？總之，我的重點是，在英國呀喜歡英式早餐的人最幸福了！因為許多pub或是這種cafe，"早餐"都是全天候供應的（咦？）。雖然沒有打上時間，不過其實我記得這餐應該是下午三點左右才吃的。
After walking around for the entire day, your feet gets tired, more or less. And of course, your tummy would also take the chance to protest as well. Well, what to do then? I don't really understand people's complaints about how terrible English food is. I rather enjoy it! Might be just me... Anyway, the point I'm trying to make here, is that if you happen to like English breakfast, there are a plethora of pubs and cafes that offer 'all day breakfast'... Can it still be 'breakfast', when you're having it in the afternoon? Cuz if my memory serves me right, this took place at around 3pm!

You can sit at this comfy couch, but eating would be rather inconvenient. Or you can sit at a normal table-chair seat...

其實早在2010年12月貼出【坎特伯里】Canterbury Cathedral一文時，我早就在當年的七月造訪過第二次了！這兩次的感觸非常不一樣。第一次因為是一個人單獨進去參觀，所以花了很多時間看透每一個細節。第二次，除了再次享受這華麗教堂的內外部，其實我最主要的目的是用新的相機把這座美麗的教堂，再做一次紀錄。
When I posted the first article on Canterbury Cathedral in December, 2010, I had already been there a second time. These two visits were very different, though. I was on my own the fist time, so I took all the time I needed to steep myself in the cathedral atmosphere. The second time round, other than enjoying everything for one more time, my most important agenda was to make a second recording of this magnificent building.

經過了一兩周的台灣食記轟炸，我想大家看食物應該看的也累了！所以我們再來把焦點轉移到英國吧！由於我是英國台灣這樣穿插的再貼文，在這裡我想我必須再次提醒讀者們，其實這次是我第二次造訪坎特伯里。第一次來的時候，花了許多時間參訪博物館以及大教堂。整個時間被占去因此有許多其他的事物都來不及嘗試。既然有機會能夠再來第二次，我就想說要嘗試一些第一次來的時候無緣參與到的事物囉！這個河上導覽就是其中之一。
After a few weeks of Taiwan food articles, I'm sure you're getting a bit sick and tired of looking at food, food, and not thing but food articles. So here we are again, back in the UK. Since I'm sort of overlapping Taiwan and UK articles, I feel obliged to remind you again that this was my second time to Canterbury. The first time round, I took a lot of time in museums and the cathedral itself. Because time was a valuable asset, I had to be selective of what I did. Since I was lucky enough to come back for a second visit, I decided to try things that I did not try the first time round. This river tour, was one of them. 
在坎特伯里的High Street上就會看到有人在拉客人。放心！他們是做正當行業的，而且如果你只是想要了解，也不用害怕先詢問詳情以及價錢。這裡不像亞州地區的拉客方式這麼強勢。如果你決定要搭乘，其實搭乘地點就在這個餐廳的後方。不過你可別大剌剌的從這個門走進去啊！這大門是給用餐的人進去的！
On the High Street of Canterbury, you'll see people shouting out to tourist luring them to do the boat tour. If you want to know a bit more before you decide, don't feel intimidated, approach them and enquire all you want. It's not like in some Asian countries where they would be really aggressive when you approach them, then get really offended when you decide to leave. If you decide to do the boat tour, the place to board is actually the back of this restaurant. However, don't just walk into the front entrance! That entrance is reserved for people who are dining at the restaurant!

天啊！這房子是怎麼一回事！？地震嗎？
Do you remember this picture from the end of last year? Yes, little London Paddington was playing a big part in making my 2010 UK trip much more delightful than it would've been without it. This one was taken at a crooked house in Canterbury, one which I had once written an article on once before. This one is to refresh your memory, and also for my personal agenda: compare the pictures taken by two different cameras. Links to my old article on this crooked house, and the crooked tea house in Windsor can be found at the bottom of this article. Meanwhile, enjoy the crookedness of this house. 
還記得去年底的這張照片嗎？沒錯，倫敦熊伴我遊英國，讓我2010年的英國行添加了不少樂趣。這張照片就是在這間歪歪的房子外頭拍的。之前寫過一篇關於這間房子的文章。這次再重新貼一篇，目的有兩個：一、讓大家重新回味一下；二、給我自己比較一下兩款相機拍起來的效果。本篇文章結尾處有連結至舊文，不過先來欣賞一下這間不正的房子吧！

Because I had taken some time to visit the interior during my last visit, I only took a few shots of the exterior this time (the main focus is on Paddingon Bears this time). I thought the effect would look drastically different with the wide-angle lens in this camera. And indeed! 
因為上次來的時候有花點時間逛逛內部，所以這次只快速的拍了幾張外部的照片（這次重點是柏齡頓熊）。想說這次用的相機是超廣角，所以應該拍出來的效果會比之前的相機好很多，結果...果然啊～！！

Standing across from the main entrance to St Augustine's Abbey, on a patch of land called Lady Wootton Green, are two statues of King Ethelbert and Queen Bertha. The unique thing about these two statues is the exquisite details of each and every part. From the upper and lower torsos, to the clothes and accessories on them, no detail went unnoticed. It's definitely worth taking some time to examine. 
King Ethelbert was king of Kent from 580 or 590 until his death. He was the first king to convert to Christianity. The eighth century historian also referred to him as the third king to hold imperium over the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. 
於St. Augustine Abbey入口正對面，有一片地叫做Lady Wootton Green。這裡有兩座雕像－Ethelbert國王與他的皇后Bertha。這兩座雕像特別的地方在於它們精準的雕刻。每個細節都非常有看頭。除了人物的身體本身之外，身上的衣服以及配件都相當的細緻。如果經過，真的值得花點時間好好用眼睛品嘗一下這兩座雕像！
Ethelbert國王於580或590統治肯特郡直到他過世。他是第一個信仰季督教的國王。八世紀的歷史學家更稱他為盎格魯撒克遜地國中第三位擁有最高權力的國王。

I don't know when I started to have such an enormous appetite. Perhaps it was because knowing that after this trip, it would take an even longer wait for me to come to the UK again, and thus I forced myself into making the most of it - even my belly. I was hungry almost all the time. I wanted to eat everything I saw on the menu. But... I knew that was impossible. I still had to make a choice. 
This restaurant looked very colourful. My friend and host said it was quite good. So we decided, or rather I decided, that we should have dinner there. 
不知道從什麼時候開始，我的胃口開始變得很大。或許是因為知道這次的旅程結束後，我不知道要等多久才能再繼續回到這裡來，所以更想要把握一切：包括食物。我隨時隨地都在肚子餓，看到什麼就想吃什麼！可是當然是不可能的事情啦！所以還是得有點選擇性啦！
看到這間餐廳的繽紛色彩，加上我地主朋友也推薦，就決定晚餐在這間解決囉！
My friend is a big tea drinker. She loves English tea, yet, she's French. 
我朋友很愛喝茶。他很愛英國茶，不過有趣的是，他其實是法國人～
This was my mussels meal. I had never had such an enormous plate full of mussels before! It was so satisfying! 
這是我的淡菜餐點。我從來沒有一個人吃這麼一大盤淡菜過！吃得好過癮啊！
Compared to my enormous appetite, my friend was more keen on light meals. This, even, was a bit too much for her small appetite. And I felt like a pig, but I didn't care! I was on holiday! 
相較之下，我朋友她比較喜歡輕食。其實就連這盤對她來說都有點多。所以一起用餐讓我感覺好像頭豬。不過，管他的哩！我在度假ㄟ！
The bread dipped in the mussels sauce was absolutely divine! The plate with water and a piece of lemon in it was there for you to wash your hands. You can't really enjoy mussels without dirtying your hands after all, can you?
用麵包沾淡菜的湯汁實在有夠好吃的啦！旁邊那一碗有檸檬的清水，是給你洗手用的。畢竟吃淡菜不沾到手，感覺就不過癮啊！你說是吧！？

It's a pretty interesting restaurant. Come for some tea or even a meal if you drop by Canterbury. It's on the High Street, and with its colourfulness, there is no way you're going to miss it. 
這間餐廳還挺有趣的。來到坎特伯里可以來這裡喝杯茶，或是吃上一餐。就在主要大道High Street上。這麼特殊的裝潢，我猜你不太可能錯過的！

Canterbury is the only place, other than London and Liverpool, that I visited for a second time during this trip. There were a few reasons for this: 1. my friend was still living there at the time, and if I missed out on the opportunity to visit her this time, I didn't know when I would see her again (seeing that prior to our reunion a couple of years back, we had not seen each other for 14 years...) 2. it was such a lovely place, there was absolutely no reason not to visit! 3. my friend had suggested that we visit some surrounding towns, places that I did not get to see last time. So here I was again, in Canterbury. This time, with a slightly different mood. But pleasant, nonetheless.
坎特伯里是我這次去少數有與之前重複到的地方（倫敦與利物浦除外）。這其中有幾個原因：一、我朋友當時還住在這裡。基於我們曾經分隔過十四年，若錯過這次又不知道要等到什麼時候才能再見面了！所以當然要把握！二、我本來就非常喜歡這個地方，所以沒有理由不來第二次。三、朋友建議說我們這次可以去看看上回沒見到的周圍小鎮（又更吸引我了！）所以我就又來這裡了！雖然這次心情不太一樣，但還是依然的很享受。
But before I get into the details of what I saw and ate during this second trip, I'd like to take a moment to reminisce the scenes of this gorgeous little town in Kent. 
不過在我詳細敘述我在此行所見、所食前，我想先花點時間回味一下這肯特郡小鎮的美麗風景。
